We play Chester-le-Street Riverside Park, sharing two excellent greens with the Chester-le-Street Bowls Club.
The map shows the lawns near the top just east of the main A167 road. Click on the map to enlarge. [Note: the bottom right red marker refers to county cricket club facilities and is nothing to do with croquet.]
Public (pay-and-display) car parks are about 200 metres south just above the B1284 Chester-le-Street to Houghton-le-Spring road. The 2015 rate is a reasonable £1.50 for 4 hours. From there, the greens are a short walk (aim towards the refreshment kiosk – the greens are behind it).
There are housing estates to the west of the A167 accessible from the A167 into Roman Avenue (postcode DH3 3PW) immediately south of a footbridge over the A167 that gets you immediately to the lawns. There is limited on-street parking there, currently free, but the area can get parked up at times.
Arriving from the Motorway
Leave the A1(M) at junction 63 (at the underpass roundabout take the first exit if coming from the south or the 4th exit if coming from the north. This will be the A167 heading to Chester-le-Street and Durham.
At the next roundabout take the first exit and you are driving past Riverside Park on your left. You will go under the footbridge described above after a few hundred metres.
At the following roundabout, EITHER take the first exit (B1284) and then left after 200 metres into the public car park, OR the 4th exit (going back north on the A167) when after around 300 metres, immediately before the footbridge you turn left into Roman Avenue.
WARNING: the A167 is a fast and busy road, so turning into/out of Roman Avenue must be done with care.
The Bowls Club has its own clubhouse that is part of a larger building. There are toilets (male and female) and a small kiosk that serves teas, coffees, ice cream etc. The clubhouse has its own kitchen, changing rooms and toilets.
