More congratulations to our protege, John-Paul Moberly, who has risen up up the ranking lists to number 3 in England and number 12 in the world following his latest win in The Musk’s Cup at Nottingham over 27-29 August 2016.
J-P was in a select group of 8 who contested an initial all-play-all block with the top four entering the knock-out competition for the title.
J-P won 6 out of his 7 matches to head the block, winning 5 of them in straight games.
Having beaten England number 2, Stephen Milliner, by 2 games to 1 in the block, J-P met him again in the final and in spite of losing the first game 5-7 won the last two by the same 7-4 scoreline.
Well-done J-P. Onward and upward!
The 2016 John Cotes Trophy competition took place on Wednesday 24 August in warm and glorious sunshine. Fourteen members joined in a knock-out handicap singles competition with 40 minute timed games.
The final was between Anne Barnfather and Malcolm Hobbs in a closely contested game that Malcolm eventually won 4-2.
The plate competition for first round losers ended up with a final between Madeleine and Roger Carpenter with Roger eventually prevailing.
Members were delighted to see John and Sarah Cotes towards the end of the afternoon , when John presented trophies to the winner and runner-up.
Wednesday 24 August sees that annual competition for the John Cotes Trophy.
This is a handicap singles knock-out GC competition with entry available to paid-up club members only. for those knocked out in the first round there is a separate Plate competition.
Play starts as soon as possible after 1 pm. The weather looks set fair.
Saturday 20 August 2016 was forecast to be wet and very windy as our team of Roger Carpenter, Andrew Carpenter, Michael Hobbs and Nigel Martin travelled to Albert Park, Middlesbrough for this year’s GC Division 1 match.
In the event, the rain held off until lunch time after which there was a somewhat wild spell.
In spite of the adverse conditions, we all had a very pleasant day with Middlesbrough being attentive hosts as usual, with an equally pleasant score line: winning 14½-3½.
It is pleasing to report two successes by our younger members over the weekend.
Junior International John-Paul Moberly won the third London Master event held at the Surbiton club beating UK No. 2 Stephen Milliner in his block. J-P is now ranked No. 8 in the UK.
Andrew Carpenter also retained his Smokeys Cup title in the B-level competition at Phyllis Court (Henley) winning 12 of his 14 matches along the way.
Many congratulations to both.
Saturday 6 August 2016 saw a warm and sunny day at the Riverside at Chester-le-Street where we played our Division 1 GC league match against Tyneside, winning 10½-1½.
While the league matches are a team of 4 format, unfortunately our opponents were unable to field a full team and so it was three against three (allowed for under the rules), playing 6 doubles and 6 singles matches.
The team was Andrew Carpenter, and Nigel and Susan Martin.
