Durham beat Belsay 10-8 in first league game of the season

Croquet Durham visited the beautiful gardens of Belsay Hall on 21 May to play Belsay in their first match in Division 1 of the Croquet North Golf Croquet League.

With rain forecast, the two teams were lucky to have very little to put with on that front as a closely fought match progressed through the six rounds of play (Two singles and a doubles in each round).

Neither side was more than one point ahead until the final round when Croquet Durham managed to squeak it by 10 games to 8.

So congratulations to the Durham team of Roger Carpenter (Capt.), Malcolm Hobbs, Nigel Martin and Clive Rook; and many thanks to Belsay for their hospitality on a day that eventually turned out sunny and warm.

Durham hosts first Croquet North high-bisque GC handicap doubles event

Croquet Durham hosted a very successful GC handicap doubles competition at Chester-le-Street Riverside on Friday 20 May for pairs with a combined handicap total of at least 12.

Apart from a few short showers, the five pairs had a very enjoyable day playing in an all-play-all format with the eventual winners being  Marcia Henderson and Jane Pringle from the Auckland club with 4 wins ahead of runners-up Libby Cansino and Roger Carpenter (Croquet Durham) with two wins and a draw.

Many thanks go to Susan and Nigel Martin who organised and refereed the day respectively.
